High fired terracotta Monrovia tiles feature a custom chevron design and Spanish Brown glazing inspired by contemporaneous churches as only a portion of the original church had survived. In 2000, Pope John Paul II proclaimed the Mission Church a basilica, a title only granted to churches with special historic, religious, and cultural significance.
